Flower morphology variation in five species of Penstemon (Plantaginaceae) displaying Hymenoptera pollination syndrome

چکیده
Background: Geographic distance promotes phenotypic variation by facilitating environmental distance, limiting gene flow, and exposing plants to different pollen vectors. Therefore, understanding how plant morphology changes across a geographic range improves our of the drivers morphological diversification both on macro- micro-evolutionary scale.
Questions: 1) How do location abiotic factors affect flower between populations? 2) Is there pattern variation? 3) does yearly in temperature precipitation within populations?
Studied species: Penstemon albidus, P. fruticosus, glandulosus, speciosus, whippleanus
Study site dates: The continental USA, summers 2017 2018
Methods: Fifty-seven populations 496 individuals were selected at random measure ten floral traits. Bioclimatic variables extracted from WorldClim database NOAA. Linear models, partial least squares regression, Mantel tests canonical correlation analysis used analyze data.
Results: alone explained significant portion two species, while others, did not vary despite large distances. albidus whippleanus flowers increase size south-north, glandulosus speciosus exhibited an east-west increasing trend. Additionally, mean annual was most important variable influencing glandulosusflower morphology.
Conclusions: facilitates isolation-by-distance isolation-by-phenology as well differences populations; however, other such pollinators might be keeping morphologically homogeneous distance.

Nomenclatural novelties and notes in Penstemon (Plantaginaceae)
Seven nomenclatural novelties in Penstemon (Plantaginaceae) are proposed for taxa that will be included in the forthcoming treatment of the genus in the Flora of North America North of Mexico series. Three additional novelties are made for Mexican taxa outside the flora area. Penstemon xylus A. Nelson is determined to be the correct name for the species heretofore called P. tusharensis N. Holmg...
متن کاملPOTENTIAL DISTRIBUTION MODELING OF pensTeMOn OKlaHOMensis (PLANTAGINACEAE)
penstemon oklahomensis is an endemic to the southern plains region that occurs in Oklahoma and one location in Texas. As an aid to conservation of this species, we used a species distribution model to map the possible extent of penstemon oklahomensis in Oklahoma. Location data were derived from specimens in the Oklahoma Vascular Plants Database and occurrence records maintained by the Oklahoma ...
متن کاملReproductive biology and nectar secretion dynamics of Penstemon gentianoides (Plantaginaceae): a perennial herb with a mixed pollination system?
BACKGROUND In many plant species, pollination syndromes predict the most effective pollinator. However, other floral visitors may also offer effective pollination services and promote mixed pollination systems. Several species of the species-rich Penstemon (Plantaginaceae) exhibit a suite of floral traits that suggest adaptation for pollination by both hymenopterans and hummingbirds. Transition...
متن کاملMolecular and morphological evidence for Penstemon luculentus (Plantaginaceae): a replacement name for Penstemon fremontii var. glabrescens
Penstemon luculentus R.L.Johnson & M.R.Stevens, nom. nov. replaces Penstemon fremontii var. glabrescens Dorn & Lichvar. The varietal name glabrescens was not elevated because it was already occupied by Penstemon glabrescens Pennell, a different species. This new arrangement is supported by molecular and morphological evidence. An analysis of genetic diversity in populations of both varieties of...
متن کاملFlower morphology, pollination biology and mating system of the complex flower of Vigna caracalla (Fabaceae: Papilionoideae).
BACKGROUND AND AIMS Vigna caracalla has the most complex flower among asymmetrical Papilionoideae. The objective of this study was to understand the relationships among floral characteristics, specialization, mating system and the role of floral visitors under different ecological contexts. METHODS Five populations were studied in north-western Argentina, from 700 to 1570 m a.s.l. Anthesis, c...
